We also have a forward by John Bouroughs, one of the foremost experts in Ornithology at the turn of the 20th century.  This forward first appeared in a book titled Bird Neighbors, printed in 1897 (Who’s in Your Garden is based on Bird Neighbors), and is just as viable today as it was then.

When reading the forward, there are a couple of things to keep in mind.  First, we’ve left the spelling just as it was then.  For instance, today, the word clews is spelled “clues.”  I’m sure you’ll find 2 or 3 other words that just don’t look “right”, but that’s how John spelled them, so that’s the way we left them.

Also, where he speaks of “opera glass”, today we use binoculars instead.
